Earlier this week at my clergy text study and New Joy’s Wednesday Bible Study I had my First Look at Sunday’s Scripture. After some study, prayer, reflection and conversation, here’s my Second Take.

Our readings for Sunday are:

Daniel 12:1-3

The deliverance of God’s people at the end

Psalm 16

My heart is glad and my spirit rejoices; my body shall rest in hope. (Ps. 16:9)

Hebrews 10:11-14 [15-18] 19-25

The way to God opened through Christ’s death

Mark 13:1-13

The end and the coming of the Son

Toward the end of the church year every November, and at the beginning of a new church year each Advent, we read Scripture that looks ahead through difficult times toward God’s renewal of all things - an event variously described as the “second coming” of Christ, the “Day of Judgment,” or the establishment of a “new heaven and a new earth.”

Some parts of Christianity, particularly some sects of American protestant Christianity since the 19th century, have clung enthusiastically to these “apocalyptic” verses. They try to parse and interpret them so as to determine with confidence when the “end times” are coming, to anticipate the cosmic conflict between God and the forces of evil, and sometimes even to provoke such end times through their own violent deeds.

Christianity is a forward-looking, hope-filled faith that seeks God’s reign of justice for all humanity. We do not eagerly anticipate some sort of annihilating doomsday that will destroy the many only to save the few. Such is the unfortunate religious fantasy some Christians have broadcast into our culture.

These “end times” readings - such as those we have assigned to us this week - are words of hope written amidst times of great sorrow and struggle for God’s people. From the prophet Daniel this week we read of “a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence.” Jesus, speaking with his disciples in Roman-occupied Jerusalem, tells his disciples that “Not one stone [of the grand temple buildings] will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” War, conflict, violence is coming.

These Scripture passages do not relish the conflicts they anticipate. They do not cheer for violence, as if widespread human suffering would initiate God’s heroic intervention. Nor do they look ahead with any specificity to the year 2024 foretelling from ancient Babylon and Judah what would be happening today in North America. No. That’s not how Biblical prophecy works.

These passages describe real conflicts that real people faced in the times and places these Scripture were written. In Daniel’s time the people were returning to Jerusalem after 40 years in exile, only to face continued conquest and war from larger nations. In Jesus’ time Roman-occupied Judah was a tinderbox of political and social tension, ready to spark and ignite in flames at any moment. That’s exactly what would happen in the year 70 when the Romans sacked Jerusalem and burned the Jewish temple to the ground.

And in the midst of such tension, conflict, and anticipated warfare, God’s message is clear: God will deliver his people. War and suffering are not the end of the story. God is with us amidst our trials and tribulations. God will lead us through.

So have hope, beloved of Christ. In whatever challenges you face in this season of life, whatever worries you have about the world or your own household, you are not alone. The hardships of the world do not define us. The sorrows we see are not all that there is.

Instead, Sunday’s Scripture are full of hope and promise:

Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit aids and comforts his followers

Daniel tells us that “those who lead the many to righteousness [will shine] like the stars forever and ever”

The letter to the Hebrews encourages us to “hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful”

Psalm 16 praises God, singing, “You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy”

Beloved, let us face the sorrows of the world with a sober mind and a heart of hope, trusting in God’s promises. Come, Holy Spirit!

As I stated in my previous post, in order for us to understand Jesus’ mission, it really helps if we understand Leviticus 25. When Jesus first preaches publicly in the Gospel of Luke, he claims that the “year of the Lord’s favor” is here! The year of the Lord’s favor is the jubilee year of Leviticus 25, a reference that his first hearers and the first generations of Christian certainly understood.

When Jesus preached in the Nazareth synagogue, he reads from the prophet Isaiah:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
(Luke 4:18-19, quoting Isaiah 61:1-2 & Isaiah 58:6, and referencing the Jubilee of Leviticus 25)

This idea of “the year of the Lord’s favor” is found in Leviticus 25, where we read about both the Sabbath Year and the Jubilee Year.

Recall that in the first chapter of Genesis the LORD makes the heavens and the earth in six days, and on the seventh day rests. One of the Ten Commandments is to “honor the sabbath and keep it holy.” Thus, six days are for work; the seventh day is for holy rest. In Leviticus 25 we read that not only are days organized into cycles of seven, but so are years.

3 Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in their yield; 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of complete rest for the land, a sabbath for the Lord: you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. 5 You shall not reap the aftergrowth of your harvest or gather the grapes of your unpruned vine: it shall be a year of complete rest for the land. 6 You may eat what the land yields during its sabbath—you, your male and female slaves, your hired and your bound laborers who live with you; 7 for your livestock also, and for the wild animals in your land all its yield shall be for food.
(Leviticus 25:3-7)

Every seventh year is a year of rest for the land and for those who work the land. And, more than rest, it is a year that focuses our reliance on God, for God will provide.

19 The land will give its fruit so that you can eat your fill and live securely on it. 20 Suppose you ask, “What will we eat in the seventh year if we don’t plant or gather our crops then?” 21 I will send my blessing on you in the sixth year so that it will make enough produce for three years.
(Leviticus 25:19-21)

Just as days are organized into weeks, and years are organized into “weeks of years,” those “weeks of years” (seven-year periods) are grouped into cycles of seven.

8 You shall count off seven weeks of years, seven times seven years, so that the period of seven weeks of years gives forty-nine years. 9 Then you shall have the trumpet sounded loud; on the tenth day of the seventh month—on the day of atonement—you shall have the trumpet sounded throughout all your land. 10 And you shall hallow the fiftieth year and you shall proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you: you shall return, every one of you, to your property and every one of you to your family. 11 That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you: you shall not sow, or reap the aftergrowth, or harvest the unpruned vines. 12 For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy to you: you shall eat only what the field itself produces.
(Leviticus 25:8-12)

In the year of jubilee, property sold will be returned to the original owner (Leviticus 25:28, 31). Anyone who is bound to the service of another because of unpaid debts is set free (Leviticus 25:39-41). Wrongs are made right. The land, kinship, and community are restored.

The year of jubilee outlined in Leviticus 25 is a reversal of much of the brokenness of society, and a triumph of God’s glorious intent for his chosen people.

The Hope of Leviticus 25, Part 1

[Photo credit: An Idyll of the Deep South, by Aaron Douglas, 1934]

Christians often give short shrift to large swathes of the Old Testament. Baked into much of Christian culture is a latent, misguided notion that the Hebrew Bible is all laws and fire and brimstone. That’s a big problem, for our understanding of Scripture, of the Jewish people, and of our Savior Jesus. Devaluing the Old Testament is just one example of Christianity’s longstanding antisemitism – who needs the “Old” when we have the “New”? And, what should we think of “those people” who read only the “Old”?

(Nearly two years ago I wrote “The Jews” Did Not Kill Jesus, addressing problems of anti-Semitic interpretations of the crucifixion story.)

Some Christian leaders and scholars, instead, choose to refer to the “Hebrew Bible” and the “Christian Testament,” or the “First Testament” and the “Second Testament.” Such language avoids the negative connotations of an “Old” text replaced or improved-upon by the “New.” Scripture – from Genesis to Revelation – tells of God’s unstoppable grace, reveals wisdom for holy living, and recounts the stories of God’s relationship with God’s people.

Jesus’ powerful teaching in Luke 4:14-30 about releasing the captive and good news for the poor (the Gospel we read on Sunday and will read again this coming Sunday) finds its roots all the way back in the book of Leviticus. Yes, THAT Leviticus – the book that talks about purity laws and tattoos, clean and unclean foods, Sabbath and sexuality, and more. It’s one of those books that even Christians devoted to the regular reading of Scripture struggle with due to its many layers of ritual and cultural practices that do not have direct corollaries in today’s Christianity. Reading of Leviticus is further complicated when some Christians use isolated verses as bludgeons in culture war battles surrounding human sexuality.

But let me tell you – to understand Jesus’ mission, it really helps to understand Leviticus 25. Because in Luke chapter 4, his first public teaching, Jesus claims that the “year of the Lord’s favor” (that is, the jubilee year described in Leviticus 25) has come. His first hearers understood that jubilee reference, as did the first Christians who read from the Gospel of Luke. So, let us join them in such understanding.
