Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

We are pleased to announce that on Sunday, July 12, New Joy Lutheran Church is returning to in-person, outdoor worship at our new pavilion. Services will continue to be streamed online via YouTube for those not attending in person: New Joy YouTube Channel

We are committed to making our worship experience safe to help "stop the spread" of COVID-19 in our community. We know that COVID-19 has spread at churches around the country, and we do not want our worship to be a vector for disease. As such, we are adhering the following protocols for worship:

Worship Protocols

We are wearing masks at worship, removing them only if necessary when beyond six feet from someone else.

All attendees will bring their own folding chairs. Seating will be arranged with at least six feet of distance between household groups.

We are not singing in worship at this time, to avoid extended projection of aerosols that carry the coronavirus. Music for meditation and reflection will be played throughout the service.

Worship is a "no touch" experience. We are not receiving holy communion, passing offering plates, distributing bulletins, or greeting one another with handshakes or hugs.

The bathroom is not available for use, except for emergency needs only. Please use the restroom at home before coming to church. We want to all but eliminate the touching of shared surfaces (door handles, toilet seats, etc.) inside our church building.

Following worship we will depart to our own cars, avoiding extended conversation and fellowship.

We recommend that people bring water to drink, as it can get warm outside in the sun. Tailgate-style tents and umbrellas are welcome to be set up further back from the pavilion to provide additional shade.

Worship is at the heart of our life together as a church. It is at the foot of the cross and the opening to the empty grave that our Lord comes to us both in our sorrow and in our joy. In sorrow and in joy we gather to give praise, to lift up our prayers, to receive God's many blessings, and to be renewed in the Living Word for our mission in the world.

Worship will look and feel different during this pandemic, but God's grace is unwavering. Let us embrace the difference of this time, experience the promise of our Lord's presence in new ways, and engage the complexity of this moment with the gift of faith.

Dear friends, the church still gathers. By God's grace, we remain connected in faith, hope, and in love. I'll see you at church.

Pastor Chris

I skipped "Pandemic Pastoring 101" at seminary.

As Indiana slowly returns toward a tentative full opening on the 4th of July – even as Carmel’s 4th of July parade has already been canceled – houses of worship around the state are making their own faithful, local decisions about when and how to return to in-person worship.

Opening a church building, after all, is quite different than opening an office, restaurant, or barber shop.

For one, #TheChurchStillGathers. Our building has been closed, but our ministry has not shut down. We have continued to worship and pray, share fellowship, study God’s Word, give, and serve. We are blessed with generous and faithful financial support that has maintained New Joy’s expenses and enabled the expansion of our ministry online. Thank you for your faithfulness.

Secondly, gathering for worship is qualitatively different than pretty much any other way we interact with others in society.

We sit together in one room for just over an hour.

We shake hands and even hug one another at church.

We share a ritual meal that includes dipping bread into a common cup.

We sing.

We share coffee and conversation afterwards.

Children run around and touch things - many things.

Each of these behaviors are understood to be risky, contributing to the spread of the coronavirus.

Guidance from our local bishop, our denomination, and our insurance company urges caution. Experts convened by national choral associations say it is not safe to sing. Serving food and handing out items – from bulletins to communion – is off the table for now. Maintain six-foot distance. Clean constantly.

We are working on a path forward

The Ministry Board met earlier this week, and will meet again in two weeks to determine our faithful path forward. We are reading updated recommendations from church leaders and from state public health officials. We are considering the call of faith to put the needs of others before our own (Philippians 2:4) and to seek the welfare of the whole community (Jeremiah 29:7). The last thing we want is for our worship gatherings to become, unintentionally, vectors of viral infection. As we consider reopening our building for in-person worship and ministry, safety is our focus and the logistics of safety are our conundrum.

Livestream will continue

Throughout all this, we are committed to continuing the livestream of our worship services, recognizing that even when New Joy returns to some form of in-person worship many of you will choose to stay home. #TheChurchStillGathers

Two of the most consequential moments in the Bible’s story are the Exodus and the Exile – periods of generational disruption for God’s people. These periods included weeping and lament, renewal and hope, adaptation and struggle. Yet through it all, God was faithful.

So too for us now. God’s Word is not absent from us. Instead, we are more aware than ever of the Living Word’s pervasive and persistent presence, coming to us in our living rooms and on our devices, in Zoom calls and in our daily devotions, in our walks outdoors and our unexpected and socially distanced interactions with others. The Spirit is leading us into new ways of hearing and heeding God’s call.

Dear friends, by the grace of God, #TheChurchStillGathers. Thank you for being the church. Pray for your Ministry Board and me, your pastor. Pray for our community, nation, and world. Be patient with one another, and with yourself. Trust in God, who is most certainly our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1).

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Chris

Let Us Pray

I invite you to pray with me.

This week it was announced that the coronavirus has killed more Americans than did the Vietnam War, and has disrupted the economy and our daily lives in unprecedented ways. Nearly four months after news of the coronavirus was first reported, and after seven weeks of social distancing and closure of school buildings, workplaces, restaurants, and church buildings to flatten the curve of infection, there’s talk of “opening up” society again.

Let us pray.

With limited testing and research on-going, there are still more unknowns about the nature of this disease than knowns. The critical decisions facing policy makers, and the continued challenges confronting researchers and medical professionals, are daunting.

Let us pray.

Businesses large and small have shut down or severely limited their work. Millions are applying for unemployment benefits, and the state struggles to keep up with demand. Up to 30% of renters may not be able to pay rent this month, resulting in an unprecedented wave of evictions.

Let us pray.

This is no time for simple answers. These are extremely complex public health, economic, and social challenges facing us.

Let us pray.

We are a church that still gathers at the foot of the cross and the opening to the empty grave. The Holy Spirit continues to bring us together despite all the disruptions. We have adapted our ministries to sustain Bible study, worship, and fellowship online.

Let us pray.

As our congregation eventually comes out of the most restrictive of public health protocols, we will face new challenges about how to come together as the Body of Christ and how to live God’s promise in care for our neighbor. And beyond the pandemic, New Joy is a church with a vibrant ministry and an exciting future. What lies ahead of us during and after this pandemic?

Let us pray.

At this time of uncertainty, I will be praying every day in a way that I haven’t prayed in a long time – maybe ever. I invite you to join me in prayer.

Speaking personally, this pandemic — preceded for me by the challenges of a year-long separation from family and church during my deployment overseas — is shining a light on my need for more prayer and deeper spiritual growth. More than ever I need the comfort, strength, and clarity gained from a life grounded in prayer. Perhaps you do, too.

Let us pray.

Linked below is a simple outline of prayer called “Responsive Prayer.” Responsive Prayer has been published in Lutheran prayer books for over 100 years. Print it out and tuck it inside your Bible, or set it on your desk, nightstand, or kitchen table. Or bookmark this link and come back to it on your phone or computer each day.

This is an outline you can pray at morning, noon, or night. I’d suggest that you make it a routine tied to a meal or time of day, rather than let it be a “when I get to it” kind of thing. We often don’t get to those things that we fail to prioritize. I know I don’t.

Please join me in prayer. I can use the spiritual company. And I’m sure we can all can use the spiritual connection.

Lord, hear our prayers, and let our cries come before you (Psalm 102:1).

Amen.

Pastor Chris

If you are unable to join in the livestream service:

Live on Sundays at 9:30 am, or an archived recording of the service at a later time – use this order of prayer together with the Sunday bulletin, which can be downloaded from NewJoy.org. Contact Pastor Chris or a sibling in Christ from church to share these words with you from a safe distance (perhaps in your garage or on your back deck), or over the phone.

If more than one person is sharing in this time of prayer and worship, designate one person to serve as leader, or take turns leading the service.

GATHERING

Using the bulletin, sing or say the words of the opening song as you begin your time of worship and prayer together.

Offer an opening prayer, asking God to bless this time of worship, and to bless all in our congregation who are far from each other at this time.

Continue with saying the confession and singing or saying the Kyrie.

WORD

Read the psalm (responsively), speak the Prayer of the Day, and read the Scripture passages.

Where the sermon usually takes place, pause to reflect on the readings, highlighting what you hear God speaking to you and to our world in these verses.

Sing or speak the words of the Song of the Day.

Say the church’s mission statement – we are the church even scattered! – and lift up your prayers to God, for the church, the world, and all those in need, and in particular for the sick, medical personnel, and our elected and public health leaders.

Speak a word of God’s peace to one another, and receive the comfort of God’s peace for yourself.

Pause to make an act of offering – setting aside a gift for the church and/or for the sick and poor, writing a check, or making an online gift. Lift up a prayer thanking God for the opportunity to give, and asking God’s blessings on all who are moved by faith to give in the midst of this virus outbreak.

MEAL

If you’re not following along with the livestream, use the following instructions for Holy Communion.

The leader addresses the participant/s.
L: Gathering with our sisters and brothers at this communion table which knows no end,
we remember God’s great works of grace from Creation to the Exodus,
God’s promise showing forth through appointed judges and kings,
and prophets speaking words of judgement and hope.
We recall that in the fullness of time God sent his Son, Jesus,
to bear in his life, death, and resurrection the grace and promise of the Kingdom of God.
With our sisters and brothers we remember that
“in the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.”

All join in the Lord’s Prayer.

Following the prayer the leader continues:
L: This is the supper of our Lord Jesus Christ. This same bread and cup, shared by our dispersed sisters and brothers in faith, are here given for us to receive.

L: These are the gifts of God, for us the people of God, and for that we say,
C: Thanks be to God.

The leader then gives the bread and wine, saying:
L: The body of Christ, given for you.
L: The blood of Christ, shed for you.
The communicant may respond, “Amen.” Silence for reflection may follow.

The following or a similar prayer after communion may be said.
Let us pray.
L: Almighty God, you provide the true bread from heaven, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant that we who have received the sacrament of his body and blood may abide in him and he in us, that we may be filled with the power of his endless life, now and forever.
C: Amen.

SENDING

Returning to the bulletin say the blessing, sing or say the words of the sending song, and declare the dismissal.

Holy Communion Amidst the Coronavirus Disruption

The coronavirus has ushered us into a time of disruption. Our homelives are disrupted. Schools are disrupted. Business and the economy are disrupted. And most certainly, the medical community is disrupted.

The church, too, is disrupted. We’re scattered in our homes, unable to come together each Sunday “at the foot of the cross and the opening to the empty grave.” We are missing out on greeting one another with God’s peace, singing and praying together, sharing our Lord’s supper of grace and mercy, studying Scripture together, and enjoying fellowship around coffee and conversation.

Ours is a Social and Physical Faith

It’s not just a human need for companionship that is met when we come together, but also a spiritual need. Christianity is inherently a social faith and a physical faith. We were made in God’s image for relationship, just as the Holy Trinity itself is a divine relationship between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Saint Paul describes the Christian community as a body of believers of many interdependent spiritual gifts – we need each other to be the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12). In Genesis 1 God declares that it is not good for us to be alone.

Ours is also a physical faith. Jesus didn’t come to this world as a disembodied spirit but as a man in flesh and blood. God made the world and saw that it was “good;” when God made humanity, he declared it “very good” (Genesis 1). The created world gives praise to God in the psalms (Psalm 148), Saint Paul writes of the resurrection of the body (Romans 6:5; 1 Corinthians 15; etc), and Revelation promises a new heaven and a new earth joined as a physical, tangible new creation (Revelation 21). Jesus calls us to care for the bodily needs of our neighbors (Matthew 25). And, on the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and wine and bid us to receive it as his body and his blood. Our central rituals as Christians – baptism and holy communion – are inherently tactile, physical experiences through which our Lord promises to bless and hold us.

In Lutheran churches this tangible meal of God’s grace and mercy – Holy Communion – is administered within the body of believers by an ordained minister. In obedience to our Lord’s command the church gathers for the Eucharistic Meal, the pastor retells the story of our Lord’s Passion, the congregation lifts up its prayers, and God’s people share in the promised presence of our Lord in the bread and cup – the body and blood – of his holy meal. This has been the practice of the Lutheran church for 500 years, and for our Catholic predecessors for more than a millennium before that.

Worship Disrupted by COVID-19

Out of concern for the health of our neighbors, the public at large, and ourselves, and in observance of the Governor’s stay at home order, we cannot gather together to partake in the banquet feast of our Lord’s grace and mercy. Fundamental to the character of holy communion are the prayers and gestures we share, the proximity we keep while receiving the sacrament, the Word proclaimed and present, and the common bread and cup we share in this sacred meal. At the beginning of this crisis we extended the communion table from New Joy into our homes by delivering bread and wine from our altar to many of our New Joy households, striving to faithfully adapt the Christian church’s longstanding practice to these unique circumstances. Under the current public health protocols, we are unable to do so again.

Prevented from gathering as Christians normally do for communion, do we suspend partaking in the sacrament? During Lent do we now add Holy Communion to our list of Lenten fasts? This is the decision some of the historic Christian churches are making. Roman Catholics, the Orthodox Churches, and many Episcopalians are refraining from communion during this crisis. Our church – the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – is not of one mind on whether or how we should continue sharing Holy Communion as a church that gathers online rather than in person.

Keeping Communion While Keeping Distance

During these extraordinary days New Joy will continue to share in the communion feast together from our homes, joined together “in spirit and truth” (John 4:23) as we worship together. Now, more than ever, we need to hear and receive the promise that Jesus Christ is given “for you.”

Over the coming weeks as we continue to gather together in our homes for worship I invite you to use bread and wine (or grape juice) from your pantry to celebrate holy communion in your homes in concert with your dispersed sisters and brothers at New Joy. This is certainly not the norm of Lutheran practice, nor of the Christian tradition. But these are not normal times. With reverence, grace, and promise, we will continue to share in our Lord’s Supper even as we keep our necessary social distance.

To maintain the unity of our Lord’s table and to nurture your own preparation for worship, I urge you to continue observing, as much as practicable, our shared worship time of 9:30 on Sunday mornings. Wake up, get dressed as you might for church, and prepare as if you were heading out to church. But rather than get into the car, I invite you to set up your computer or smart television or mobile device. Prepare bread and wine (or juice) for our communion meal.
Setting up Holy Communion at Home

It might feel odd to celebrate communion at home, but don’t let that get in your way. Your home is a sacred space where God is pleased to dwell! Set aside a special place as your home altar. Place a linen cloth on a coffee table or your kitchen table as a corporal, the cloth on the altar on which we set the bread and cup for communion. Spread another cloth overtop the bread and cup as a veil. Paper napkins can work just as well if linens are not available. Mark this space as sacred by setting up a small cross, lighting a candle, or placing a bowl of water to recall your baptism. Purple fabric is appropriate for our current season of Lent. When it’s time for Easter, bring out some white or gold fabric to make it festive with a celebration of resurrection life.

Any plain bread will do for Holy Communion. There’s no need to keep it small, however. The small portions we share at church are largely a practical concern of how to serve so many people at once in our ritual meal. In the intimate gathering at home let the communion meal more resemble the extraordinary heavenly banquet feast that is to come! On a grocery run before Sunday purchase a French or Italian loaf from the bakery section at the grocery store, or share home-baked bread still warm from the oven. Break off a piece, share it as the body of Christ, and allow the sensory experience to complement the spiritual promise of this meal. Familiar sandwich bread or crackers can be used, too.

Open a bottle of red wine and pour into glasses for those sharing. Grape juice may be used as well. You may share the cup by intinction – dipping the bread in the cup – or by drinking. Again, enjoy a robust glass of this drink of promise. No need to keep the amounts small.

The communion we share together while dispersed in our homes is the same promised presence of our Lord Jesus that we receive at church. Jesus promised that the bread and cup of this holy meal were his body and blood. Martin Luther wrote that the most important words of holy communion are, “for you” (Small Catechism, Explanation of Holy Communion). The body and blood of Jesus is given for you, especially in these times of social distancing and public concern.

The bread and cup of communion bring God’s promised presence to us. Handle these elements not superstitiously but reverently and with thanksgiving. At the conclusion of the service eat and drink any remaining bread and wine. You may also return the bread and wine to the earth, preferably not down the drain or in the trash can but outside to be received by God’s good creation.

Avoid sharing holy communion apart from participating in the livestream (live on Sunday mornings, or replayed later), or apart from using the attached Brief Order For Sharing Holy Communion During Social Distancing. Communion is the highpoint of a worship that includes confession and absolution, hearing God’s Word, singing God’s praise, offering our prayers, and sharing and receiving Christ’s peace.

God’s richest blessings to you as we continue to be God’s people gathered not together in person but together in spirit and truth. Please do not hesitate to contact me or the church office via email, social media, Zoom, or phone. Let me know how I can support you during these challenging days.

Blessings,

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

On Monday at noon Governor Holcomb addressed the state announcing a "stay at home" order for all residents for the next two weeks. In his announcement he praised the efforts of medical professionals to safeguard our public health and care for the sick. We should be exceedingly proud of Alexa, Jason, Charlotte, Paula, Patti, Adam, and all partners and friends of New Joy who work in the medical professions and extend our Lord’s healing through their work. Let us hold them in prayer and reach out to them and their families during this extraordinary time.

Governor Holcomb is urging everyone to stay at home as much as possible. It is in times such as these that Christians would do well to "obey the governing authorities" (Romans 13) and honor their stewardship of the common good.

In his announcement Governor Holcomb also gave a generous word of praise for religious communities who have worked hard to provide online and streaming content for the comfort of their members. In his executive order, the Governor identified religious organizations among "essential businesses and operations" (Executive Order, paragraph 14.e). We play an essential role among our partners in ministry and in our community. We will continue to carry out our ministry in adapted ways appropriate to the current crisis and public health protocols.

Starting Tomorrow at New Joy...

Starting tomorrow the church office will be closed except for Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Our staff will work as much as possible from home, and only come to the office during designated times for essential in-person tasks.

We will reduce the number of personnel involved in our worship livestream to only one or two musicians, myself, and one or two people to operate our (new) technology. Assisting ministers, readers, and acolytes will not participate in the livestreams at this time.

We are increasing our use of Zoom video-conferencing platform for fellowship gatherings. On Sunday our TGIF youth gathered on Zoom, and on Tuesday morning our Seasoned Believers will do the same. We'll see more of that over the days and weeks to come.

“Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I’m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves. My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light.” –Matthew 11:28-30

In this time let us put our cares on our Lord Jesus, coming to him in prayer, worship, and in faithful conversation. Share your burdens with me, your pastor, and with your sisters and brothers in Christ. The prayers of the faithful are effective (James 5:16). Especially in these stressful times, may the church fervently exercise what Martin Luther called "the mutual conversation and consolation of the saints" – that is, the ministry of pastoral care, bearing each other's burdens, and mutual confession (see Smalcald Articles, .III, 4, Concerning the Gospel).

Blessings to you during this extraordinary period. I look forward to seeing you on a future Zoom call or on our YouTube Livestream, sharing with you on Facebook, or catching up with you on old fashioned phone call.

Blessings,

Pastor Chris

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under the sun ... a time for embracing and a time for avoiding embraces. Ecclesiastes 3:1,5

New Joy Worship Services Suspended

New Joy Lutheran Church is suspending worship services in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. This is our time to avoid embraces.

This is not a decision I made lightly or easily. I did not make this decision alone, but as Pastor I bear primary responsibility for our life together.

I discussed our response to this outbreak over recent days with our Board and other leaders, and had come to a different decision up to this point. But in this changing environment I have reconsidered the situation and, in consultation with medical and congregational leaders, I have decided that we will close for worship.

Messaging from federal and local government officials, public health officials, experts on television and radio, and medical professionals is not consistent. This reality makes it very difficult for we who are not public health experts to discern the best way forward.

I have spoken with and heard directly from local medical professionals who are strongly urging that everyone maintain "social distancing" to avoid transmission of this virus, and that we not meet in large groups. This applies to Sunday worship, Wednesday Evening Prayer, and Wednesday Bible Study.

The church office will remain open. The Preschool has closed.

This is a serious enough situation that the Governor and the President each have declared states of emergency. Certainly people will have different - and strongly held - opinions about our decision to close and about the widespread disruptions in our daily life that response to this virus is causing. So be it. If erring on the side of caution is the best we can do, then let's do it for the sake of our neighbor and nation. After all, we live not for ourselves but for others.

Modified Livestreamed Worship

A modified worship service will be live streamed on the New Joy YouTube Channel. Livestream is new to us. We'll do our best to make the technology work, and I'm sure we'll get better at it as we gain more experience.

New Joy YouTube Channel

In this time of heightened anxiety and disruption, let us be a sign of Christ's peace to one another.

ELCA presiding bishop addresses concerns about COVID-19

In 1527 the plague returned to Wittenberg, Germany. Two hundred years earlier the plague had swept across Europe killing up to 40% of the population. Understandably, people were anxious and wondered what a safe and faithful response might be. In answer to this, Martin Luther wrote "Whether One May Flee From a Deadly Plague." In it, he emphasized the duty to care for the neighbor, the responsibility of government to protect and provide services to its citizens, a caution about recklessness, and the importance of science, medicine and common sense.

To provide care for the neighbor, Luther recommended that pastors, those in public office, doctors and public servants should remain in the city. Luther himself remained in Wittenberg to care for his people. He recommended that public hospitals be built to accommodate those with the plague. He condemned those who took unnecessary risks that put themselves and others in danger of contagion. Luther also encouraged the use of reason and medicine, writing, "God has created medicines and has provided us with intelligence to guard and take care of the body. … Use medicine; take potions which can help you; fumigate house, yard, and street; shun persons and places wherever your neighbor does not need your presence" ("Whether One May Flee From a Deadly Plague," 1527).

We are living in the time of the coronavirus. We are also living in the time of social media and constant, relentless news coverage. Many of our people have the same concerns as those in Luther's day. Many of our people are anxious. Luther's counsel, based on Scripture, is still sound. Respect the disease. Do not take unnecessary risks. Provide for the spiritual and physical needs of the neighbor. Make use of medical aid. Care for one another, especially the most vulnerable.

The church-wide organization recommends the following for church-wide staff:

Wash your hands, stay home when you are sick, wear a mask if you have symptoms, consult your medical provider. Bishops and pastors will provide guidelines for worship and church gatherings.

Luther also reminded his people and us that we should trust God's faithfulness and promises, particularly the promise eternal life. Paul writes: "If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's" (Romans 14:8).

In peace,
The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton
Presiding Bishop
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
