First Holy Communion classes at New Joy are held typically in the fall. Through these classes children, youth, and adults alike learn about and experience the mystery and promise of this sacrament.
What is Holy Communion? Holy Communion is a sacred meal in which Jesus Christ comes to us in bread and cup. “This is my body given for you … This is my blood shed for you.” We believe those words to be true. Each week we share this sacred meal, in keeping with the most ancient patterns of the church.
There is no minimum age for receiving Holy Communion. Our Lord invites all people of all ages to this sacred meal. In years past the church had age requirements as a way of inviting young people to examine themselves and understand what it is they were receiving, believing that children were best prepared to receive at a certain age. Now we understand that such examination and understanding can take place at a variety of ages and in a variety of ways.
Children who express an interest in receiving the sacrament, and who participate in worship with their gifts of presence, song, joy and movement, are likely ready to receive communion for the first time.
