Earlier this week at my clergy text study and New Joy’s Wednesday Bible Study I had my First Look at Sunday’s Scripture. After some study, prayer, reflection and conversation, here’s my Second Take.

Our readings for Sunday are:

Daniel 12:1-3

The deliverance of God’s people at the end

Psalm 16

My heart is glad and my spirit rejoices; my body shall rest in hope. (Ps. 16:9)

Hebrews 10:11-14 [15-18] 19-25

The way to God opened through Christ’s death

Mark 13:1-13

The end and the coming of the Son

Toward the end of the church year every November, and at the beginning of a new church year each Advent, we read Scripture that looks ahead through difficult times toward God’s renewal of all things - an event variously described as the “second coming” of Christ, the “Day of Judgment,” or the establishment of a “new heaven and a new earth.”

Some parts of Christianity, particularly some sects of American protestant Christianity since the 19th century, have clung enthusiastically to these “apocalyptic” verses. They try to parse and interpret them so as to determine with confidence when the “end times” are coming, to anticipate the cosmic conflict between God and the forces of evil, and sometimes even to provoke such end times through their own violent deeds.

Christianity is a forward-looking, hope-filled faith that seeks God’s reign of justice for all humanity. We do not eagerly anticipate some sort of annihilating doomsday that will destroy the many only to save the few. Such is the unfortunate religious fantasy some Christians have broadcast into our culture.

These “end times” readings - such as those we have assigned to us this week - are words of hope written amidst times of great sorrow and struggle for God’s people. From the prophet Daniel this week we read of “a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence.” Jesus, speaking with his disciples in Roman-occupied Jerusalem, tells his disciples that “Not one stone [of the grand temple buildings] will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” War, conflict, violence is coming.

These Scripture passages do not relish the conflicts they anticipate. They do not cheer for violence, as if widespread human suffering would initiate God’s heroic intervention. Nor do they look ahead with any specificity to the year 2024 foretelling from ancient Babylon and Judah what would be happening today in North America. No. That’s not how Biblical prophecy works.

These passages describe real conflicts that real people faced in the times and places these Scripture were written. In Daniel’s time the people were returning to Jerusalem after 40 years in exile, only to face continued conquest and war from larger nations. In Jesus’ time Roman-occupied Judah was a tinderbox of political and social tension, ready to spark and ignite in flames at any moment. That’s exactly what would happen in the year 70 when the Romans sacked Jerusalem and burned the Jewish temple to the ground.

And in the midst of such tension, conflict, and anticipated warfare, God’s message is clear: God will deliver his people. War and suffering are not the end of the story. God is with us amidst our trials and tribulations. God will lead us through.

So have hope, beloved of Christ. In whatever challenges you face in this season of life, whatever worries you have about the world or your own household, you are not alone. The hardships of the world do not define us. The sorrows we see are not all that there is.

Instead, Sunday’s Scripture are full of hope and promise:

Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit aids and comforts his followers

Daniel tells us that “those who lead the many to righteousness [will shine] like the stars forever and ever”

The letter to the Hebrews encourages us to “hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful”

Psalm 16 praises God, singing, “You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy”

Beloved, let us face the sorrows of the world with a sober mind and a heart of hope, trusting in God’s promises. Come, Holy Spirit!

For the second week in a row, I neglected to address in my sermon the elephant stomping around the Sunday Scripture readings. Last week I did not speak about marriage and divorce – which were central themes in both the Genesis and Mark texts. This week I was all but silent on the issue of money, wealth, and justice even as those featured prominently in our readings from Amos and Mark.

Perhaps this makes me a negligent preacher. Perhaps. But in every text a myriad of possibilities and promises lay. My job, as pastor, is not simply to pick up the biggest nugget in the text and run with it, but to pick up the nugget which – in this moment in our congregation and community – stirs my spirit with Gospel promise for you and for this world God so loves. When I read a Scripture and cannot let go of a word or phrase or image, I take that as a sign of what the Spirit is calling me to proclaim.

But when this happens – when I leave elephants unaddressed and pages of notes on the proverbial cutting room floor – I feel a similar call to say more. The elephant in Sunday’s readings was wealth and its relationship to faithfulness.

Scripture is, at best, cautious when it comes to wealth. In parts of the Bible’s story wealth is described as a sign of God’s blessing. Yet more often we read Scripture’s wariness of wealth and its repeated examples of wealth’s corrupting influence. The Bible tells stories of the misdeeds of the wealthy and powerful, of God’s condemnation of their oppression of the poor, and of Jesus’ own heart for those who suffer and have been cast out.

On Sunday we heard the prophet Amos rail against the unjust economic schemes of the powerful. The LORD speaks with anger and judgment against a society that “pushed aside the needy” and embraced evil. The LORD denounces an elite class that afflicted the righteous and crushed the weak. “Seek the LORD and live,” the prophet proclaims. “Hate evil and love good; establish justice at the gate.”

What’s particularly notable about this text from Amos – and about the prophets, more broadly – is that the LORD’s concern is not with the sins of one individual. The word “you” in this text is plural in the original Hebrew. The LORD condemns an entire class of people and denounces the unjust economic and legal systems they control. Systemic injustice is real – the LORD calls it out right here. In English we don’t have an easy pronoun to delineate between “you” singular and “you” plural, leading us to sometimes misunderstand when Scripture is describing individuals or groups of people. This linguistic quirk contributes to our culture’s incorrect yet widespread assumption that sin is mostly an individual affair, rather than something that can and does infect entire systems and structures.

In Sunday’s Gospel from Mark 10 Jesus loves a rich man who sincerely wants to live in the promised Kingdom of God. When Jesus invites him to sell everything he has and give to the poor, the man balks. Jesus responds by doubling down to proclaim that it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God (in fact, it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter eternal life!). Certainly, Jesus speaks in hyperbole at times, but the lesson cannot be more clear: wealth is a stumbling block to faithfulness. The Roman Catholic Church has rightly spoken of God’s preferential option for the poor. The first will be last, and the last will be first, after all (Mark 10:31).

So how do we understand our relationship with wealth, and discern a faithful way forward in a society governed by flawed economic and social schemes?

The process involves three basic steps:

1. listening to Scripture followed by silence
2. listening to Scripture, and listening to the word, phrase, or image that is stirred up in the hearts of those gathered
3. listening to Scripture, and listening deeply to one another as we consider what this text is telling us about our lives together
4. following the discussion we conclude with one final listening to Scripture and conclude with prayer.

Our time together begins with meditative listening, and crescendos toward a lively conversation exploring the text’s wisdom for our life together.

We read the “Good Samaritan” story from Luke 10:25-37, in which two religious leaders avoid helping a man left for dead in the road but a common Samaritan – a man from a religious group seen as heretical and undesirable – aids and comforts the injured man.

Here is just some of the wisdom heard as we listened to Scripture and each other:

we are often the person walking to the other side of the road, avoiding the one in need

like the religious leaders who avoided helping the left-for-dead man, we often avoid helping those in need, even as we also know God’s call to love and care for the suffering

sometimes we are paralyzed by “what-ifs” – what if the man harms us? What if he is sick? What if I don’t know how to help? The what ifs, fears, uncertainty keep us on the sidelines

the call to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind and strength is a big ask. Can we even do that?

help, and holiness, can come from unexpected people and places – even “heretics” and outsiders

people who should know better – in this case, religious leaders – can fail to do the right thing

maybe loving God looks like loving our neighbor

how do you think the conversation between the wounded man and the Samaritan went after the man woke up and found that he had been rescued from certain death?

I give thanks to God for our gathering last Thursday night – for the faithful listening, the curiosity, the fellowship, and the sharing of insights and ideas.

Please join us on Thursday nights at 8pm this summer for Know Justice, Know Peace in the pavilion at New Joy. Bring a chair and a listening ear.
