Jesus 101, starting January 7
From January through April we’re reading through much of the Gospel of John – in Sunday worship and in daily readings. For the first six Sundays of the New Year a preaching and learning series will focus on vignettes from the Gospel of John that help us understand who Jesus is, what Jesus does, and what Jesus means for us.
January 7 – Jesus Calls Followers, John 1:29-51
January 14 – Jesus Performs Wonders, John 2:1:12
January 21 – Jesus Disrupts our Sinful Ways, John 2:13-25
January 28 – Jesus Gives Eternal Life, John 3:1-21
February 4 – Jesus Brings in the Outsider, John 4:1-42
February 11 – Jesus Makes the Impossible Possible, John 6:1-14
This series is intended to help us renew our relationship with Jesus at the start of the New Year
Learning Accompanies Worship
Following worship each week, learning for all ages will give us an opportunity to get to know Jesus in a new way. An adult class will focus on Bible stories and sharing among newcomers and established members of New Joy. For some of us this class will also prepare us to make a formal commitment to join New Joy Lutheran Church, and to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. On Sunday, February 11, we will join in prayer with newcomers who discern their call to make New Joy their church home and family of faith.
We will not have learning hour on Sunday, January 28. Following worship that day we’ll have a pot-luck luncheon and our annual congregational meeting.
A children’s class – using games, music, drama, and more – will draw young learners into the stories and power of Jesus’ baptism, and his call for helpers to follow him.
Jesus 101 leads us into Lent, a season when the church traditionally engages in increased spiritual practices and reflection. Disciplines of Bible reading, prayer, confession, service, and charity mark our lives during this season. During Lent we’ll continue with our exploration of Jesus with a sermon series called Jesus Is, focusing on the “I am” statements of Jesus found in the Gospel of John.
February 18 – Jesus is the Bread of Life, John 6:35-59
February 25 – Jesus is the Light of the World, John 8:12-20
March 4 – Jesus is the Gate, John 10:1-10
March 11 – Jesus is the Good Shepherd, John 10:11-21
March 18 – Jesus is the Vine, John 15:1-8
During Christian Learning Hour we’ll be walking through the steps and stories of the Passion of our Lord Jesus, in preparation for a Passion Play to be shared in worship on Palm Sunday, March 25.
Jesus 101 and Jesus Is lead us into the holiest time of year for Christians – Jesus’ Passion during Holy Week (Palm Sunday, March 25; Good Friday, March 30), and Jesus’ Resurrection on Easter Sunday (April 1 – no fooling!).
